Abstract
Purpose: This study was done to compare the stress and health behavior of children in the broken family with those in the normal family.

Methods: The subjects were 116 children in the broken family and 327 children in the normal family from 4th, 5th, 6th graders of 8 elementary schools in G city. The data were collected from June 1 to June 30, 2006 and analyzed using ¥ö2-test, t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient.

Results: For stress, the mean stress score of the children in the broken family is significantly higher than that of children in the normal family(t=-2.28, p=.023). For health behavior, the mean score of the children in the broken family is significantly lower than that of children in the normal family(t=4.98, p<.001). There were negative correlations between the stress and the health behavior ofl children in the broken family(r=-.539, p<.001) and those in the normal family(r=-.356, p<.001).

Conclusion: It was also concluded that the higher the stress level was for the elementary school children, the lower the degree of health behavior was. So school nurses should provide the health promoting program decreasing stress and pay
attention to children in the broken family.
